De reis naar Batik / The journey to Batik

Een vergeten Industrie
The journey to Batik, a forgotten industry

The journey to Batik, a forgotten industry, is a photo-book, showing all the aspects of the Batik industry in which the makers are key. In the photo-book is a chapter for the special projects I came across that are trying to give Batik its future back.

Batik is since 2 October 2009 the official heritage of Indonesia. In October of 2009 I spend a month in Central Java to find a Batik teacher. I had this romantic, idealistic image in my head about the Batik-culture and I was shocked to see that it's wasn't going well with this fine textile art. I visited the Batik cities Solo, Pekalongan and Lasem, but also Semarang and Jeruk.

This photo-book is made with the pictures I took on this journey. I hope to visit Indonesia again one day and learn much more about the beautiful art and philosophy of Batik!
